School Chaplains. Why are they really there?

In Australia we have 'school chaplains', these are in addition to school guidance officers, and seem to have little purpose that I can work out.

Are they in schools in other countries, or are we just 'lucky'?

And yes, before you ask, best as I can work out, they're government funded, and this is a State School (government school - not private).

We don't have any where I am in the US.  I don't believe I would be so happy to see them arrive.  I don't believe the publicly funded schools here can have them though....

Well, I wish that was the case here. OK, if they want to put people trained in social work in schools that's fine - but why do they also have to have religious qualifications - If the kids want to learn about religion there are other ways.
